Board members present Hal Gensler Sandra Fontaine Lindsay Edmondson Norm Janoff Sharon Ross Diane Bailey steven finkelstein Distinguished Guests Mark Brust -- Sports Supervisor for City of Peoria Bill Rowell Meeting commenced at 6:31 p.m. Meeting minutes from April were approved with corrections. Mark Brust addressed the Board first. He thanked ARR for putting on the Luck of the Draw event at Rio Vista. Peoria is interested in hosting more ARR events in the future, especially events that promote youth fitness. Brust suggested as a concept a series of events staged in Peoria with an incentive to participants to take part in all series events. The Rio Vista park can accommodate 700 cars for parking. Peoria will be hiring a fitness coordinator who could also help in staging any ARR events in Peoria. Peoria could also help with volunteers for any events. Peoria is not requesting to share in ARR race entry fees. Mr. Brust requested that the Board consider his proposal. There was discussion about the proposal with no final decision made. Old Business: The Walk against Domestic violence went well despite bad weather conditions. The Club made $500 by providing chip timing services for this event. Five chips were lost, highlighting the need to include language in the contract about recovery of chips and compensation for lost chips. Bill Rowell reported that the Relay for Life also went well. 80% of ARR’s fund-raising goal was met. The Weiner Dash on May 5th was a successful Club run. The Luck of the Draw race at Rio Vista Park had good turn out and happy runners thanks in great part to the efforts of Sharon Ross and Mark Brust. Norm Janoff reported that there was at least one complaint about the men’s restroom facilities being inadequate (one was out-of-order). Sharon Ross reported generally on the race and how it went. Finance Report: Hal Gensler reported that ARR has $20,000 in the bank currently. He further reported on his work to obtain water, water bottles, and cups through Water Mill for ARR races. Hal provided an income statement and advised the Board on the Club’s 2007 income/expenses as compared with its 2006 income/expenses. Membership Report: Norm Janoff reported that total membership is up to 1,059. Registration Report: Sandra Fontaine reported on her work to better organize registration for ARR races and signs/poles for the registration tables. Special Activities Report: Diane Bailey reported that she has picked up the awards for the summer series races. Clothing Report: Sharon Ross reported that the new clothing has arrived with new colors and shared samples of throw-away gloves she is considering selling. Sharon also reported on potential sock purchases/stocking; potential purchase of club t-shirts; putting the Club’s logo from the jackets onto other Club items and equipment; t-shirts for the summer series; and requested discussion on the Club’s policy for providing t-shirts to pre-registered entrants who do not show up on race day. Volunteer Report: Lindsay Edmondson reported that the Club is in good shape for Summer Series No. 1 volunteers. New Business: Sharon Ross reported that the City of Surprise is interested in planning a race to coincide with the Super Bowl in 2008. There was discussion concerning how this might impact ARR’s Desert Classic Marathon at Riverboat Acres. Sharon Ross also reported that she had contacted Quick Trip about donating gas for the Jerome Hill Climb race to offset the cost of staging that race. Summer Series: Logistics for Summer Series No. 1 were discussed. Other summer series race details and logistics were briefly discussed. Club donations: Last year, the Club made a contribution to the charities involved in each of the races it timed. The amount donated was 5% of the Club’s income from the race. steven finkelstein suggested that the Club reestablish this practice of giving 5% to each of the charities involved with the races that the club times. Elections: steven finkelstein reports that the website now includes information concerning all of the Board positions to be filled in September elections, and an e-mail blast was also sent out the membership concerning elections and the need to expand the Club’s involvement in all areas of the Valley. Action Sports Marketing Group has contacted the Club again about sponsorship. Sports Authority is interested in sponsoring the Summer Series race at South Mountain. steven finkelstein will send the sponsorship information to them. Meeting adjourned at 9:00 PM.
